Fogra is a research organization operating under the umbrella of the AiF, which oversees and supports joint industrial research (IGF) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The objective of Fogra is to promote print engineering and its future-oriented technologies in the fields of research and development, and to enable the printing industry to utilize the results of this activity. To this end the association maintains its own institute, with about 50 staff members including engineers, chemists and physicists. Fogra has the following areas of research:
- Prepress technology (Digital reproduction of pictures and colour management, graphical 3D printing, PSD certification, acceptance tests of printing machines).
- Printing techniques (Different printing techniques like offset-screen-digital printing, modern screening techniques, tone value increase, PSO certification).
- Materials & environment (Physicochemical analyses, consumables like paper-ink-varnish, additives like fountain solutions-washing agents).
- ID-Cards & printing finishing (quality properties of ID-cards and passport documents, functional products, security features, bookbinding and print finishing).
