Background

Ali's academic background is in surface science and manufacturing engineering, with a strong interdisciplinary orientation. He has a BSc and MSc in Materials Science (2011 & 2013) and a master's degree in the Tribology of Surfaces and interfaces - TRIBOS (2019), awarded with the Erasmus Mundus scholarship from the EU. He also has four years of professional experience as a product engineer in the corrosion protection and copper industries. He continues his research and studies on the optical properties of structured surfaces as an ApPEARS fellow, which is funded by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions under the Horizon Europe program.

Aspirations within projects

Within ApPEARS, he hopes to further his knowledge of the optical science of surfaces prepared using novel processes, particularly additive manufacturing, including 2.5D and 3D printing. An innovative strategy for linking optical property parameters with surface structuring is to combine materials science, manufacturing engineering, and appearance measurement. His project's purpose is to investigate the appearance and surface quality of 3D-printed components through this novel approach.
